Hemlock Wooly Adelgid Control – Newington CT

The Hemlock Wooly Adelgid nymphs are beginning to feed. A tiny insect closely related to the aphid, the wooly adelgid feeds on the sap of our native hemlocks. The nymphs have piercing-sucking mouth parts and are found on the twigs at the base of hemlock tree needles. The eggs begin to hatch in early April, and the nymphs become mature by late September. Crawlers resume feeding in mid-October and develop into the over-wintering adults. They feed all winter and mature by spring. It is believed that the adelgid introduces a toxin into the tree that may contribute to the death of the tree. Hemlock trees that have been stressed by drought may be at risk of early demise with this infestation.

If you have hemlocks on your property, inspect them for these parasites. An obvious sign of a hemlock wooly adelgid infestation is masses of white wax filaments, described as cottony masses near the bark at the base of the needles. The wooly adelgid can be effectively managed from late September through October. Once the wooly adelgid has been identified on your hemlock trees, they can be sprayed with non-toxic insecticidal soap and horticultural oil sprays. If you are a homeowner and have hemlock shrubs and hedges, you can treat them with an application of this horticultural oil. Larger trees will have to be treated by a professional arborist.

If you find egg casings or evidence of parasitic activity on the hemlocks around your home, give us a call at Call 860-667-1158
